OUT-OF-NETWORK PROVIDER

I am currently an out-of-network provider. That means that I choose not to contract with insurance companies so that I can deliver the best possible treatment without the insurance restrictions. Although there are some benefits to using insurance, like less potential out of pocket costs, there are several restrictions. The following list provides information about some of the restrictions insurance companies impose:

  • Insurance companies potentially have access to all of your private records.
  • Insurance companies require a diagnosis to warrant services. Many people are struggling and need therapy but may not meet the criteria for a diagnosis.
  • A diagnosis is permanently on your insurance record and may impact future employment.
  • Insurance companies get to decide how many sessions you can have.

As an out-of-network provider, I can provide you with a document called a "superbill" that you can use to seek reimbursement from your insurance company (the superbill must contain a formal diagnosis). You can usually submit the claim on your insurance company's member portal or website. NOT ALL INSURANCE COMPANIES REIMBURSE FOR THERAPY.

To avoid unexpected costs, it is highly recommended that prior to starting therapy, you contact your insurance company and ask the following questions:

  • Does my plan provide out-of-network reimbursement for mental health benefits?
  • Does my plan have an out-of-network deductible that I need to meet before being reimbursed?
  • If yes, what is the amount?
  • Does my plan limit the number of covered sessions per year? If yes, how many sessions are covered?
